Tribute to Agostinho Moreira – December, 2018

Agostinho JBSM was the fifth son of our family. He joined JSM on 1st January 1980, when he gave up his studies in a medical course at the Oporto University. While he was a student, he was an active member of the Orfeão Universitário, because of his passion for music. Along with music, he also had the opportunity to discover and develop another skill there: eletronics. With his own hands he built up equipment for the performances that were held in many places in different countries. As one of his mates at the Orfeão said “Agostinho was no engineer, but no doubt he knew more than many engineers do.” To those who were familiar with him, it was not surprising to notice that his pockets were always full of screws, but no medical books were in his briefcase.
He introduced the use of the bagpipe in the Orfeão and thas was the reason why a homage was payed to him by a former mate, who played that instrument in a thrilling moment at his funeral.

Agostinho was a partner and also manager at the firm J.S.Moreira until the beginning of January 2018. He was responsible for the machinery equipment. There he had the opportunity to put his skills and knowledge into practice, and so improving the manufacturing process by increasing the automation capability of the machines, and also by making new machines out of old ones, as he did with some stock fence machines bought in the USA, ready to turn into scrap iron.
With his work, the company increased his productive capacity and eficiency, and we can’t forget that some of his innovations are unique up to the present and only used at J.S.M. His last work was the recovery of a fifth machine, which he could not finish completly, because of his disease.

He was a family man, loved good food and good wine and enjoyed to gather family and friends around a table. He also liked travelling, mostly to Galiza, Picos da Europa or Pireneus. There’s no doubt that his dedication, his huge creativity and execution capacities made a difference in our firm. Without him we couldn’t have reached the stage where we stand now. Agostinho left us a legacy of dedication to J.Silva Moreira. But beyond that he left us the big responsability to follow the road that together we built. Along with him, we want to pay a solemn homage to the founder of this company, Joaquim da Silva Moreira, but specially to his follower, Agostinho da Silva Moreira, the father of its current owners. We owe him the tremendous effort
and will to educate us all. And we can never forget the main role played by our beloved mother, Joaquina Augusta de Sousa Baldaia.
Now, the fourth generation already working at the company, have the duty to follow and develop the path we took, aiming a future which may be not quiet, but must undoubtably be firm. This is the best homage we can pay to our beloved Agostinho.
